Protecting displays from the biggest bumps in the road

Cushioning and damping for your most valuable spaces.

  • Person touching information display screen
  • In a world of the increasingly precise, lighter-weight materials required for information displays, vibration and impact are among some of your worst enemies. Effective energy damping, absorption and dissipation become even more critical when the number – and the value – of precision components expands, and the available space does not.

We provide thin, lightweight cushioning and damping foams that internally absorb and disperse virtually all shock energy during impact, reducing vibration and helping prevent display screens from flexing, distorting and cracking. We also provide highly damped engineered elastomers as custom isolators to protect electronic and mechanical devices from shock, vibration and noise. These products have been proven in demanding consumer electronics applications for many years.

This is in addition to our impact-resistant tapes, built to absorb energy through the adhesives themselves and through viscoelastic foam cores that have been proven for over 30 years on exterior automotive components and architectural panels on building exteriors. Let 3M provide science-based solutions to help keep your information displays intact for the long term.

Aearo Technologies Shock and Vibration Materials

Provides shock and impact resistance while helping prevent buzz, squeak and rattle issues.

How a good foam can save your displays

Damage from impact occurs when shock energy returns, or bounces, between an impacting component, such as a display panel frame which has been bumped or vibrated, and a stationary component such as the edge of the display screen. Aearo Technologies CONFOR™ Foams absorb and dissipate impact energy without collapsing or “bottoming out.” As a result, most of this energy is absorbed within the foam and virtually none is returned to the frame. This helps reduce load points, prevents flexing and keeps the frame and the screen intact.

A drop test for stopping impact energy

Drop height: 2 feet • Foam thickness: 1 inch • Weight: 16.9-pound

The classic drop-shock test using a 16.9-pound weight shows that an undamped urethane returns nearly all of the impact energy while the CONFOR foam absorbs it.
