Effective EMI shielding and grounding are fundamental techniques for helping minimise EMI noise in electronic components. But electrical system designs are becoming more complex, with smaller and more powerful devices in close proximity, and often under harsh conditions. That demands more than standard foil tapes and gaskets!
At 3M, we put decades of expertise into electrically conductive tapes and gaskets built through and through for robust EMI control. That means shielding and grounding tapes that help minimise EMI noise, even through the bond line gap. It means performance where it counts – conformability, adhesion, electrical resistance and more – for higher SNR across a broad range of frequencies. It means solutions that help consistently meet your design challenges and EMC requirements.
3M material science at work - conductive fillers, particles and backings help provide different levels of EMI reduction across frequencies
Our experience developing electrical and adhesive solutions is rooted in consumer electronics, and consistently focused on the most dynamic, complex and demanding EMI design challenges. 3M EMI shielding materials and grounding solutions include:

See how our broad combinations of tapes, EMI gaskets, conductive carriers, and adhesives can help you solve complex shielding and grounding challenges. Enjoy benefits like high adhesion, low outgassing, long shelf life, and the high performance of reliability-tested conductive pressure-sensitive adhesives (CPSAs).
LCD touch displays are often built with plastic frames to meet weight specifications. Yet the frames still need structural support and EMI control in a small space. 3M™ Electrically Conductive Tapes can help provide lightweight mechanical stability, plus EMI shielding and a reliable grounding path. They help reduce induced EMI noise between the touch panel and LCD caused by repeated touch pressure. Our tapes can also help prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) issues.

FPCs are often used in compact spaces due to their flexibility and light weight. When the FPC is not grounded properly, the “bias” voltage yields unwanted signal transmission or EMI. 3M™ Electrically Conductive Tapes feature high adhesion and low R to create a reliable grounding connection that decreases EMI noise, reduces bias and lowers radiated RF noise. Plus, conformable tapes help retain the flexibility you need, preserving the mechanical freedom of the FPC.
Featured products:
COFs can shorten signal paths, speed up response time, increase heat dissipation and reduce assembly steps. However, by design FPCs are very thin and flexible – leaving them vulnerable to EMI.
Electrically conductive single sided tapes from 3M are thin yet conformable, allowing for complete EMI protection even around curved surfaces. Their high tack helps overcome stress following lamination and helps prevent issues related to lifting. Foil tapes deliver excellent XYZ-axis based conductivity and XY-axis electrical resistance through their conductive adhesives, and provide shielding effectiveness as high as 70 dB at select frequencies.

Even with optimised grounding and Faraday cage designs EMI can be a real problem at high frequencies. This is especially true if standard electrically conductive tapes leave bond gap/slits related to adhesive thickness. Poor through tape performance can result in crosstalk, stray EMI, noise and other issues.
3M™ Electrically Conductive Tapes are flexible, conformable and feature conductive pressure sensitive adhesives that provide inherent EMI shielding. These tapes are excellent for precise placement in tight spaces for 100% EMI-sealed bond lines, reducing crosstalk, noise in circuit, antennae effects, FPC susceptibility and spurious emissions.

Replace large shield-can lids – and optimise your design with sleek and slim conductive adhesive tapes from 3M. Featuring conductive particle fillers and a variety of metal foil and coated backings, our tapes provide comparable shielding to metal components while saving space, weight and cost. They are flexible and conformable to help you eliminate gaps in the Faraday cage design while expanding design freedom.

Higher signal-to-noise (SNR) ratios are essential in sensor applications for accurate detection and classification. Electrical current and ground impedance are top challenges. They can cause distortion from data source inputs and prevent quick, accurate analysis, prioritisation, and processing of critical messages. Used to attach sensors to FPCs or PCBs, 3M™ Electrically Conductive Tapes help enlarge, stabilise and reinforce the grounding plane beneath the signal to help decrease EMI noise.

Chances are you’re designing electronics that must function reliably in places they never have before. That’s why at 3M, we are testing for the future. Our methods include:
In many cases, 3M can focus our technical and testing capabilities to help identify the right solution for you and your customers. No matter what your field, you can feel confident that the 3M shielding, grounding and EMI absorbing solutions you specify will be proven for performance. Virtually anywhere in the world. Now and in the future.
3M™ Electrically Conductive Single Sided Tape 5113SFT is an XYZ-axis electrically conductive single sided fabric tape (SFT). This combination of Ni/Cu/Ni-coated conductive woven fabric carrier and proprietary conductive polyolefin adhesive filled with Ni-coated graphite particles offers:
Standard conductive materials are not always enough to shield components from EMI. In this demonstration a device emitting a 2.4 GHz signal is placed in a 1.0 mm sidewall metal box and sealed with various materials. Standard copper foil plus a standard conductive adhesive has no noticeable effect on the signal. Our high performance conductive adhesives deliver shielding capabilities far beyond conventional EMI materials. Our single sided tape blocks the signal, providing robust, high frequency shielding alongside reliable electrical contact for small grounding areas.
