3M has extended its popular range of Cubitron II abrasives to include finer grades than ever before, marking a breakthrough for bodyshops.

The science-based technology company is now offering Cubitron II Clean Sanding Hookit abrasive discs and sheet rolls by 3M in grades 240+ and 320+. Previously, the finest grade available in this range had been 220+. The coarsest remains 80+.

As with other 3M abrasives, the new discs and sheets use the company’s innovative Precision-Shaped Grain (PSG) technology. This allows them to last longer despite their fineness, as well as providing sharper, more consistent cutting.

The products also feature an advanced anti-loading coating, helping to overcome dust build-up – another problem commonly associated with finer grades of abrasive.

The new grades are now available in the UK and Ireland as 150mm diameter discs and 70mm by 396mm strips, with various other sizes to follow.

The launch follows several years of research and development at 3M’s laboratories in Atherstone, Warwickshire – where the abrasives are also being manufactured – as well as in the US. This has enabled 3M to use its PSG technology even with these finer grades.

3M applications engineer James Cavalot said: “In the past, using a finer abrasive to achieve a smoother cut has meant sacrificing product lifespan and putting up with increased loading.“
