The surface of the material to be processed is machined. The goal is usually to prepare it for the next process, such as painting, bonding, etc. This process may involve chemical, mechanical (abrasive) treatment, anodisation, corona treatment, etc.
Tapes serve various functions in the adhesive bonding of composites:
Double-sided tapes are used for temporary fixing. PTFE tapes are used to protect tools and moulds against contamination.
PET/polyamide tapes are used for flash breaking.
3M™ Polyamide Tape 855 without silicone adhesive for demanding flash breaking applications. The same applies for polyester tapes 8992. The tapes can also be used to hold parts in place. 3M™ PTFE tapes create excellent anti-friction, non-adhesive surfaces. 3M™ Film 9485PC is the best double-sided tape for temporary fixing in composite lamination processes.
During metal treatment, the metallic part is shot-peened/shot-blasted in order to produce a specific texture or hardness. Abrasive materials are fired at high speed. Areas that are not to be treated are frequently masked, and the masking coatings have to be strong and resilient.
Resistance to treatment with various methods (shot blasting, glass bead blasting, sand blasting, etc.) reduces the number of defects. 3M tapes with rubber adhesives are generally more durable than vinyl tapes, and they are designed for treatment with harder methods. Excellent adhesion to a number of metals enables the tape to stick to the part during shot peening/blasting, reducing the number of defects, spot repairs and discarded parts. 3M tapes can be easily and cleanly removed from the shot peened/blasted parts, requiring less labour.
Deburring of metal after treatment and rounding of sharp edges.
Grinding and finishing of parts after pressing/welding.
Galvanisation involves the application of thin metallic coatings by depositing one metal on another when the part is submerged in a chemical bath.
The chemical bath requires constant recirculation and filtration in order to avoid contamination of the part during the process.
Metallic parts are anodised to prevent corrosion and ensure good paint adhesion. The parts are submerged in multiple chemical baths to change the electrical and chemical properties of the metal surface.

Grinding involves removing material and preparing surfaces to shape and finish components made of metals and other materials.
3M Personal Protective Equipment offers compatibility, comfort and protection as well as the possibility of boosting protection and comfort with forced air systems.
Materials are coated to provide protection against corrosion or other factors (abrasion, UV, etc.) or to achieve the desired surface appearance.
Galvanisation involves the application of thin metallic coatings by depositing one metal on another when the part is submerged in a chemical bath. Galvanisation uses electrochemical phenomena that accompany the flow of current between the electrodes in the galvanic bath. Selected areas of metal are covered with a special masking coating to prevent them from being galvanised. The masking coatings have to be resistant to aggressive chemicals in order not to fall off from the parts.
Excellent resistance to chemical substances can reduce the need for touch-ups. Unlike liquid masking substances, 3M tapes do not require time to set. The tapes also ensure even cut-off lines and can be removed quickly, 3M™ vinyl tapes 470, 471 and 484 guarantee a perfect fit and successful masking of parts with complex shapes. 3M™ lead tape 420 has a conductive backing and enables edge tapering after application of pressure in order to prevent the build-up of the coating at the tape edges and reduce the need for grinding after galvanisation (hard chromium). The tapes can improve efficiency and quality through consistent reproduction of non-standard shapes.
Aluminium parts are anodised to prevent surface corrosion. Selected areas of the parts that are not supposed to be anodised are frequently masked. Then the parts are submerged in multiple chemical baths and subjected to electrochemical processes to create the protective coating.
Tapes can be used immediately – there is no need to wait until they set (like with liquid masking products), which increases efficiency. In comparison with liquid masking products, 3M tapes can be applied and removed more quickly, and less time is needed to clean the parts afterwards. The tapes accelerate the production of parts without compromising the quality.
Both organic and non-organic surfaces are masked and painted. Non-organic surfaces: metallic surfaces that have been anodised but have not been painted or primed. Organic surfaces: paint or primer have been applied, but not the final coat.
Planes are frequently painted with different colours, which means that the surface of the plane has to be repeatedly masked during painting. The masking tape must be capable of withstanding the weight of all masking and paint. Metallic tapes used for protection during removal of old coating.
3M tapes ensure a constant unwinding speed, improving user comfort as well as the quality and efficiency of the process. 3M tapes limit the fraying effect, the need to remove adhesive residue, intrusion of paint around the edges and tearing-off of the edges – smaller number of touch-ups required, higher quality of finish and quicker removal of the masking tape. Vinyl tape 471 can be used to mask complex shapes. 3M™ aluminium foil tapes 425 and 427 are resistant to the aggressive chemicals used for the removal of old paint coating and to abrasion, and they can be used to protect sensitive parts such as windows.
Surface levelling and roughening, particularly surface treatment (smoothing and levelling) after patching or removal of old paint. Usually with random-orbital sanders using Hookit™ discs (P80–P320). Less frequent hand machining using non-woven sheets, e.g. Scotch-Brite™.
Removal of painting defects from the finished coating using fine-grained abrasive discs (P600–P3000) (removal of inclusions, scratches, dust, uneven paint lines and “orange peel”), followed by polishing for shine using polishes and pastes with foam pads or wool pads.
For all applications in the aviation industry where customers currently use a gravity feed spray gun and a cup. If spraying very thick products, we recommend using a compressed-air gun.
3M™ Accuspray™ system with replaceable 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0 heads, working with PPS™ cups. Documented cost savings: Accuspray™ reduces solvent, primer and paint waste as well as the time needed for cleaning and servicing. All Accuspray™ spray guns and heads are manufactured in the US! Versatile applications: The system can be used for any coating application (don't wait, just paint!). A very thick coating can be applied using the Accuspray™ HG Pressure model with a pressurised hard cup with soft PPS™ liners in mini, standard and 850-ml sizes. Pressurised cup with a liner inside.
Protect your paint booth walls and floors while reducing the amount of airborne contaminants that could damage the paint coat. Apply the products on walls and floors using the dispensers to reduce paint booth maintenance time.
3M™ Dirt Trap™ protection material is used to protect paint booths and surfaces in order to reduce the amount of contaminants, dirt and dust and limit the contamination of the painted surface. In addition, the supplied dispensing tools shorten the time required for booth maintenance and reduce maintenance costs. This protection material can be used as temporary surface protection both inside and outside the booth.
The protection material is perfect for protecting surfaces and keeping them clean. It is used primarily for floors, as a substitute for paper or cardboard, which require masking (fixing to the floor or substrate) and which create a tripping hazard.
3M™ Dirt Trap™ protection material for booths and surface protection is designed to reduce the amount of contaminants, dirt and dust, and it also shortens the time required for booth maintenance. This protective material can be used as temporary surface protection both indoors and outdoors, on areas such as floors, circulation routes and stairs. If you require temporary surface protection or cleaning, try using a protection material!
Non-organic surfaces: metallic surfaces that have been anodised but have not been painted or primed.
Organic surfaces: paint or primer have been applied, but not the final coat.
Spray painting is a technique that involves device-assisted atomising of coating (paint, ink, coat, etc.) on a surface. The most popular types of equipment use compressed gas, usually air, to atomise and direct the paint particles.
The tapes can be used for riveting to hold the parts in place. During grinding, tapes with a durable adhesive layer, which can be cleanly removed, provide extra protection for the surfaces near the area to be ground.
3M™ vinyl tape 471 is the most frequently used tape for protection during machining – easy to apply on the surface and removes cleanly. 3M™ aluminium foil tapes serve as a barrier protecting against high temperatures that could damage adjacent areas. 3M™ polyethylene tape 8979 can be torn off by hand, is very resistant to stretching and has a strong backing.
Different tapes are used to hold, join and identify parts when it is important that the tape be removed without residue, e.g. joining multiple parts, etc.
3M 471 tape is available in different colours. High strength is suitable for holding, joining and identification applications. The adhesive provides clean tape removal. Wide range of colours and sizes for identification purposes. 3M™ polyethylene tape 8979 can be torn off by hand, but it is highly resistant to stretching.
Welding of joints (of metallic parts or components ) by heating the surface to melting temperature using a torch, electric arc or other method and joining them by compression, etc.
For finishing of paint coatings or composite materials, we recommend using the Perfect-It™ III Colour Code system to provide the perfect shine. Used with Trizact™ (P1500, 2000, 3000 and 5000) and Perfect-It™ sanding discs, it is the quickest way to finish the surface, and it enables easy cleaning.
3M™ Trizact™ 3000 and 6000 abrasives are used to eliminate cracks formed during removal of paint coating defects and finishing, reducing the time spent on polishing as well as the use of polishing products. The abrasives consist of precisely shaped three-dimensional pyramids consisting of multiple layers of the abrasive material, distributed uniformly on the disc. As the pyramids wear out, new, sharp grains are exposed. Polishing products are designed for optimum performance in combination with the 3M™ Perfect-It™ Colour Code system, which enables perfect polishing of the surface after the removal of inclusions and defects for an excellent result, even on dark surfaces. Remove polishing marks from painted surfaces, even from dark paints. Adaptor 3M™ Quick Connect facilitates quick replacement of polishing foam and wool pads and enables perfect pad alignment.
