In response to pressures to reduce engine noise, emissions and fuel consumption, engines are being designed to run hotter – increasing demand for super heat-resistant materials. These materials must have reliable performance at the extreme temperatures generated during the intended lifecycle and a variety of conditions undergone by aircraft engines.
Making an engine more aerodynamic can also have a significant impact on fuel consumption. Airframers and engine makers can improve fuel efficiency by around 1 percent by covering surfaces with drag reduction films. The savings in fuel efficiency, although small in percentage terms, are significant in money terms for customers in a competitive market.

3M™ Silicon Nitride Electrical Insulator At 60% lighter than steel, 3M Silicon Nitride is a lightweight, high-strength ceramic material used as an alternative to stainless steel, super alloys, tungsten carbide, Al2O3, and ZrO2. With properties such as thermal shock resistance and high fracture toughness, this material is ideal for jet engine igniters, bearings, bushings, seal rings, wear plates and other components in both aircraft engines and hydraulic systems.
