During aircraft manufacture and maintenance, aircraft skins and other high value components can sustain substantial — and largely preventable — surface damage. Durable, easy-to-use protective tape from 3M can be added to existing processes to help guard against accidental impact and abrasion. It can help aircraft OEMs reduce skin rework and save hundreds of man hours per plane.
Aircraft are built to fly, but they also spend much time on the ground. While aircraft skins and other components routinely withstand some of the toughest conditions on Earth, they are vulnerable to numerous possible hazards during manufacture, maintenance and repair: dropped tools, accidental scrapes and gouges, dents from drilling and more.
Given the high costs and long repair cycles of many aerospace components, even small knicks and scratches add up fast. Effective, cost-efficient protective material is an often overlooked yet crucial element of aircraft production and maintenance.
An effective aircraft skin protection solution must:
3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8547-1 is a durable, flame-resistant tape that can be incorporated into existing manufacture and maintenance processes. More durable than polyester or paper tapes, it provides powerful protection against accidental impact and abrasion.
The tape features low adhesive to enable large area coverage and clean removal from a variety of typical aerospace substrates and coatings including aluminum, stainless steel, glass, acrylic, epoxy primers, polyurethane paints and TPCs. It is less likely to leave visible residue, even after exposure to environmental conditions.
The following experiment illustrates the protective properties of 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8547-1 on a typical coating. A white painted panel was half covered with the tape and half uncovered. A 125 g screwdriver was dropped five times on each half of the panel, from a height of 6 inches. The tape was then removed and the surface was inspected. On the unprotected half, the screwdriver chipped the paint and scuffed the surface. On the protected half, the paint and panel were undamaged and unmarred.
3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8547-1 can be incorporated into existing aircraft manufacture and repair processes with minimal impact on operations. Its high transparency lets aircraft maintenance technicians view and inspect the surface, while exceptional conformability facilitates wrapping and protecting curved or uneven surfaces. To expedite accurate installation, it can be easily trimmed or die cut to custom shapes with common shop tools.
